The increase in IUD use coincided with a decrease in use of other hormonal contraceptives, especially in adolescents, according to a study by Dr. Barbara L. King, from the Population Research Center at University of California, Los Angeles.

The authors analyzed data from National Survey of Family Growth, a nationally representative survey of more than 3,000 women age 15-44 conducted nationally between January 1998 and December 2000.

Among the 646 women who were not using any form of contraception at the time 2006 survey, authors reported that 17.2 percent of them had already used an IUD, and 13.4 percent had used a levonorgestrel IUD.
Of the women who were not using an IUD at the time of 2006 survey, 6.7 percent had already used a copper IUD, 2.4 percent had used a hormonal IUD and 2.3 percent had used a nonhormonal IUD.
In the study population, a levonorgestrel intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) was the most commonly used IUD. LNG-IUS had a lower average levonorgestrel dose (0.4 mg/day) than the other IUDs authors looked at (0.6 mg/day for the ParaGard and 0.7 mg/day for the Skylar).
The LNG-IUS also has an average lifespan of 2.5 years. In contrast, the ParaGard lasts 5 to 6 years and Skylar's average life span is 3.6 years.

The authors also looked at how each IUD is used by adolescents: the ParaGard was used by 12.5 percent of those in the age group 15-17 and by 16.6 percent of those in the age group 18-19.
